The cells of multivitamin users may have a younger biological age than cells from non-users, according to new research from the US. Researchers led by Honglei Chen, MD, PhD from National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences looked at the length of telomeres, DNA sequences at the end of chromosomes that shorten as cells replicate and age.

Study: Heat effective in treating throat condition

Zapping away abnormal, precancerous cells in the throat may lower the risk of later developing esophageal cancer, the first major study to test this technique finds. In a study of 127 people suffering from a heartburn-related problem known as Barrett’s esophagus, only about 1 percent who had a procedure that uses heat to burn off precancerous spots went on to develop cancer over the next year.

Environmental estrogens affect breast development in male rats.

A five-generation rat study provides the clearest evidence to date that exposure to low levels of environmental estrogens can increase the risk of abnormal cell growth in the male breast. Abnormalities which could have the potential to become cancerous developed in the mammary gland tissue of male rats that were exposed to either the soy-based phytoestrogen genistein or ethinyl estradiol ñ an estrogen used in birth control pills.

More Than 70 Companies Vow to Avoid Genetically Modified Sugar Beets

More than 70 companies have signed a pledge promising to avoid using sugar from genetically modified sugar beets “wherever possible.” Genetically modified sugar beets, engineered by the Monsanto Corporation to be resistant to its herbicide Roundup, were first harvested in fall 2008.
