Carole Baggerly Posted August 1, 2009

Carole Baggerly is the founder and director of Grassroots Health, a non-profit organization promoting vitamin D awareness. After her own experience with breast cancer and osteoporosis, she learned the connection among these diseases and vitamin D deficiency, which triggered her role as an advocate. Carole shares with us her inspired work at Grassroots Health which has launched a worldwide public health campaign to solve the vitamin D deficiency epidemic in a year through a focus on testing and education with all individuals spreading the word. Carole invites everyone to join in this campaign! She empowers us to join D*action and test two times per year during a 5 year program to demonstrate the public health impact of this nutrient. Carole leaves us with an invitation to follow the unfolding science behind why vitamin D supplementation is critical to our health and the upcoming symposium on vitamin D April 9, 2010 in San Diego for everyone who seeks to study the science behind vitamin D and make wise choices for their health.

Dr. Bruce Hollis and Dr.Carol Wagner of the Medical University of South Carolina have just completed a study showing that it takes 6000 IU/day for lactating mothers to have 400 IU/day for their babies in their breast milk. In the pregnant group taking 4000 IU/day, there were

– 50% fewer premature births

– 30% reduction in pre-eclampsia and other ‘core morbidities of pregnancy’

Dr. Hollis says, “I’m telling every pregnant mother I see to take 4000 IU/day and every nursing mother to take 6400 IU/day of vitamin D. Obstetricians must know their patients vitamin D levels.”

D*action is making a special recruitment this first quarter for Pregnant and Lactating women AND their infants! We want you to know your vitamin D levels and, to protect your baby!

Scientists are calling for a standard vitamin D intake of 2000 IU/day and the achievement of a serum level of 40-60 ng/ml. Scientists’ Call to Action.

$60 and a quick health survey allows everyone to help sponsor the ‘open arm’ of this 5 year study. (The fee is $65 for a one-time sponsorship.) (There are many clinics participating and their fees may vary due to services offered by the clinic.)

– get a vitamin D blood spot test kit to be used at home (except in the state of New York)

– have the results sent directly to them

take action to adjust their own levels to get to the desired ranges with whatever help is needed from their healthcare practitioners.

With only 100 people joining up today, and getting 2 friends to join in 2 weeks (and those 2 friends getting 2 more), by week 42, there could be 400,000,000 people who are vitamin D ‘replete’! (more than the United States population).
