Almond-enriched Diet Increases Plasma Alpha-Tocopherol and Improves Vascular Function

Posted March 5, 2014

In a study involving healthy middle-aged men (56 years), healthy young men (27.3 years) and young men with two or more CV risk factors (27.3 years), consumption of almonds (50 g/d) for a period of 4 weeks was found to be associated with improvements in flow mediated dilation (FMD) and significant reductions in diastolic blood pressure, while systolic blood pressure was only reduced in healthy men.

Omega-3 PUFA as Biomarkers: Plasma Levels Predict Mortality, CV Events in CHS Analysis

Posted April 5, 2013

The highest levels of plasma phospholipid omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), as measured in >2500 older adults initially without coronary heart disease or a history of stroke, predicted the lowest mortality in the observational, prospective Cardiovascular Health Study(CHS).

Green Tea Increases Glutathione and Plasma Antioxidant Capacity in Adults with the Metabolic Syndrome

Posted February 21, 2013

In a randomized study involving 35 obese subjects with the metabolic syndrome, supplementation with 4 cups of green tea per day or 2 capsules of green tea extract plus 4 cups of water per day was found to be associated with significantly increased plasma antioxidant capacity (1.5 to 2.3 micromol/L and 1.2 to 2.5 micromol/L, respectively) and significantly increased whole blood glutathione (1783 to 2395 microg/g hemoglobin and 1905 to 2751 microg/g hemogloblin, respectively), as compared to controls, at 8 weeks.

Benefits of Fruit and Vegetable Puree-based Drinks on Vasodilation, Plasma Oxidative Stability and Antioxidant Status

Posted August 16, 2012

In a randomized, controlled, crossover dietary intervention study involving 39 subjects, daily consumption of 200 mL of fruits and vegetables as puree-based drinks (FVPD) for a period of 6 weeks (with an 8-week washout period between treatments) was found to be associated with significant increases in dietary vitamin C and carotenoids and concomitant increases in plasma alpha- and beta-carotene, as well as an increase in endothelium-dependent vasodilation (near-significant)

Modulation of T cell proliferation and cytokine response by Plumbagin extracted from Plumbago zeylanica in collagen induced arthritis

Posted April 30, 2012

The extracts of Plumbago zeylanica have been used in China and other Asian countries as folk medicine for the treatment of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and dysmenorrhoea. Effect of Plumbagin (5-hydroxy-2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone) purified from Plumbago zeylanica on Con A induced T cell proliferation was studied in spleen cells from collagen induced arthritic DBA/1 mice.
