Oral Probiotics in the Treatment of Bacterial Vaginosis and Other Vaginal Infections

In a randomized, double-blind, multi-centric, placebo-controlled trial involving a total of 544 women diagnosed with vaginal infection, oral supplementation with probiotics was found to be associated with restitution to balanced vaginal microbiota in 61.5% of subjects taking probiotics, as compared to only 26.9% of subjects in the placebo group after 44 days, and after an additional 6 weeks of follow up, more than half of the subjects (51.5%) in the probiotics group and only one-fifth (20.8%) of subjects in the placebo group were found to have normal vaginal microbiota.
